A Personal Holy Spirit

Yesterday, Vickie and I ate lunch at a local restaurant that specializes in hamburgers. I believe that they have 50 different types of hamburgers on their menu. Among their list of "gourmet" burgers are Meatloaf (the burger is stuffed with diced green pepper, raw onion and seasoning), Rowdy Reuben ( Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Thousand Island dressing served on grilled rye bread), and Pizza (grilled onions, green pepper and provolone dripping with marinara). The food was great. The service was horrible. I mentioned to Vickie that the waiter seemed so cold and impersonal. He was far too...

Keepin’ On Keepin’ On

For those keeping count, this is blog post #332. That means for the last 332 weeks, I have posted a new thought/observation/teaching/reflection. And, in those 332 weeks, there hasn't been an exception to my posting schedule. Too busy? Too tired? Not inspired? I'll have to admit, those thoughts have crossed my mind many a time. More than once, I've been tempted to skip a week or two. But, a long time ago, I learned the importance of being consistent. Over the years, I've watched a lot of my peers start a blog. They started off with great hopes and lofty ideas. Their postings were going to...

The Seed

I am a firm believer that you get what you prepare for. If a gardener prepares the soil by tilling the land and then plants watermelon seeds, he can expect to grow watermelons. If you plant watermelon seeds, you don't expect to produce carrots do you? Of course not. For the past few weeks, our children's ministry has been in the preparing-the-soil stage of ministry. We've been preparing for a mighty outpouring of God's Spirit upon our children. How? We've been teaching a series that I wrote many years ago called "The Holy Spirit in You". We've taught each lesson with the knowledge that the...

Want a Supernatural Ministry?

From time to time, I jokingly tell my senior pastor that when I came to join his ministry staff 24 years ago, my hair was red and my eyes were white. Now, my hair is white and my eyes are red and it's all his fault. It is a joke that we both laugh at. It's been a great 24 years. I've learned a lot during my 24 years at Trinity Church International and my 34 years in the ministry. My premature white(ish) hair now qualifies me to give advice to the younger ministers. What's the advice that I constantly give for having a supernatural ministry? Stay in the Word and continually pray in the...

Show and Tell

One of the highlights of the school day for most children in Kindergarten or 1st grade is the activity called Show and Tell. I'm sure that you can recall your excitement as a child when in Show and Tell you stood in front of the classroom with an item brought from home, showed it to your classmates, and then told about it. While preparing for a sermon this past week, I read a New Testament account of the Holy Spirit participating in a Show and Tell situation. It wasn't for a classroom of kids, but rather, for a city in Samaria. When revival broke out in this area, the Holy Spirit validated...
