Hopefully, I am not the only person who does this. This morning, I woke up with a song on my mind. Do you ever do this? For me, once a song gets “stuck” in my brain, I know that I will find myself singing it or at least thinking about it throughout the rest of my day. Without exception, these songs are songs or choruses that were sung during my childhood and youth.

Today was no different. This morning’s song was a hymn about the Holy Spirit that we sang often in our church. And yes, it has been bouncing around in my mind all day. But, I haven’t minded it a bit. Its message has stirred my heart today just like it did some 50 years ago.

I want to do something that I know I’ve never done in the 15+ years of writing this blog post. I want to take a trip back in time to the days of my childhood and youth and visit what we called in our church back then the song service. Oh, how we would sing about the Holy Spirit and His power service after service. As we sang these and other songs, He always made His presence known.

In this post, I want to share bits and pieces of some hymns and choruses about the Holy Spirit that I still find myself singing. (This morning was a great example.) To many of this blog’s readership, these songs aren’t known. To others, I’m quite confident that reading the words will bring back wonderful memories. I am including YouTube links for you to hear and possibly sing these powerful songs in their entirety.

1. THE COMFORTER HAS COME (These are the words of the first verse and its refrain.)
O spread the tidings ’round
Wherever man is found,
Wherever human hearts and human woes abound;
Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound:
The Comforter has come!

Refrain:
The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come!
The Holy Ghost from heaven, the Father’s promise given;
O spread the tidings ’round wherever man is found:
The Comforter has come!

2. ALL OVER THE WORLD (Our church began singing this chorus after Roy Turner and the Cameron family from Scotland visited our church back in the early 1970s.)
All over the world, the spirit is moving,
All over the world as the prophet said it would be.
All over the world, there’s a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

3. OLD TIME POWER (Man oh man, we had church when we’d sing this song. Again, this is just the first verse and its refrain.)
They were in an upper chamber,
They were all with one accord,
When the Holy Ghost descended,
As was promised by the Lord.

Refrain
O Lord, send the pow’r just now,
O Lord, send the pow’r just now,
O Lord, send the pow’r just now,
And baptize ev’ry one.

Did you take the time to click on the YouTube links? It’s an absolute MUST.

I have to quit. If I had more space, I would add the hymn “By My Spirit” which has a chorus that starts with “Not by might, nor by pow’r, by my Spirit saith the Lord of Host…” Just typing those few words brings back so many incredible memories. I’d also add “Bring Your Vessels, Not a Few” whose chorus ends with the words “…He will fill your heart today to overflowing with the Holy Ghost and pow’r.” I would also add…the list goes on and on.

What a great way to start off the day. Songs telling of the Person and work of the Holy Spirit…as we say in Texas “It can’t get any gooder than that!”. It really does make waking up something to look forward to.
