25 Jan Whacked by the Stupid Stick?

Just when I thought that people couldn't put their ignorance on display in a greater way, they continue to prove me wrong. It's as though some people have been hit with the stupid stick and gone back for a second whack! That is my thought as I've been reading through some commentaries on the Book of Acts in regards to God's miracle working power. It is evident that many today believe that God has either run out of miraculous power or relegated it just to the early days of the Church. I'm thankful that not  everyone has been whacked by that stick. In reading the book The Phenomena of Pentecost, I saw this powerful statement written by George Jeffreys. (You might want to invest some time and Google to learn more about this incredible man.) "If the supernatural was in evidence during the dispensation of the Father, and again in the dispensation of the Son, what reason is there to suppose that miracles were to cease during the dispensation of the Holy Ghost?" I recognize that churches all across our land announce from their pulpits that the days of miracles have ceased. And, they will get what they believe! I on the other hand believe that the Holy Ghost is still in the miracle working business. It's a day of signs and wonders and miracles. And, I too will get what I believe. Nursery volunteer ...

18 Jan Anticipation!

In just a couple of hours, Vickie and I are going to an event that I guarantee will bring out the little boy in me, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. I can already tell you that I'll come back home later today with my voice being hoarse from my whooping and hollering as I watch the Texas cowboys showcase their skills at bull riding, bare back riding, barrel racing, and roping contests. I can't put into words the excitement that I know that I will feel and express through my screams as I watch the cowboy mounted on the back of a bucking wild bull bolt out of the rodeo chute as the gate swings open. I know I'll be seated on the edge of my seat for two hours full of anticipation knowing that something incredible and memorable is about to happen. And so, for the sake of keeping the love in our marriage, I'm publicly apologizing to Vickie now before we get to the rodeo for what I know I will be doing throughout the afternoon! Here's a fact for those involved in ministering to children and youth. Before we enter into our ministry opportunity each and every week, we can have the same excitement and sense of anticipation that I'm feeling at this exact moment as I look forward to my Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo trip. As we spend time praying in the Spirit and preparing for our time of ministry, the Holy Spirit can put such a spirit of anticipation inside of us that will cause us to want to change the date on our calendar and/or the hands on our watch so that we can be at the ministry event RIGHT NOW! Why be so full of anticipation? Because, I'm a believer and I know that Jesus said, "these signs shall follow them that believe". I can know that I know that the Holy Spirit is up to something and I am anxiously waiting to see what He has planned. What's going to happen? I don't know. How's it going to happen? I don't know. When is it going to happen? I don't know. But, I know that I know that it's going to be incredible ...

11 Jan My Bold New Year Resolutions

It's a new year. And, as you may well know, this is the time of year when people make their resolutions for the upcoming 12 months. It could be to lose weight or be more punctual or watch less television. Perhaps you have your own list of things resolutions to achieve in this new year. Well, if the truth be known, with this being the second full week of our new year, for most, their New Year resolutions are already a major disappointment. I read online that a 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol involving 3,000 people showed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% of the study's participants were confident of success at the beginning. I don't know how accurate those statistics are, but I'm sure that they can't be too far off. (Remember, 78.2% of all statistics are made up ...

07 Jan A Special Request from Billy Burns

A few days ago, we in children's ministry lost one of our heroes. Vince Saum (AKA Big Vinny) was a legend as an evangelist, children's pastor, and producer of incredible Christian children's television programs. Vince ministered in our South Florida church several times and ministered in our district Kid's Camps for many years and was a gigantic blessing. Only eternity will give an accurate record of his investment into the Kingdom. If you've followed me for an length of time at all, you know that I never mention money. But, I want to follow Paul's admonition to Timothy (1 Timothy 5:3) and encourage you to come alongside Vince's wife Stephanie and their 7 children. We will not forsake one of our own! Vickie and I AND our ministry have given through this secure, online GoFundMe site. Your financial gift large or small would be a tremendous help and blessing. Thank you and God bless you.  https://www.gofundme.com/dzgfcchm  ...

04 Jan Have I Got a Quote For You!!!

When I was in high school, a move of God's Spirit swept across our small south Texas town. People from the Baptist, Methodist, Nazarene, and other evangelical churches were being gloriously baptized in God's Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. Needless to say, not every pastor in these churches took too kindly about what was going on. I remember that one pastor made use of his weekly column in our local Brazoria County News newspaper to attack this move of God. Looking back, I now can see just how foolish his thoughts were. But, try as they may, these pastors and their arguments arrived too late. Those individuals who had received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit had already undeniably experienced a "joy unspeakable and full of glory" (1 Peter 1:8) and teaching from God's Word  to validate their experience. Not too long ago, I came across a statement that has resonated in my spirit. Perhaps you've heard this statement before or even used it yourself. Here it is ...
