Ever since I was a child, the Old Testament judge Samson has always been one of my heroes. Unlike today’s mythical Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, this real-life hero has remained at the top of my gotta’-read-it-again list! Honestly, to me, reading his feats is better than reading anything Marvel Comics could create!
If you haven’t read Judges lately, let me give you the lowdown on this one-of-a-kind judge. The lowdown is all about the smackdown. Samson loved to put the hurt on the Philistines by picking fights with his enemies to bring about justice, catching them off guard and totally annihilating them. (I told you that this was better than Marvel Comics.)
Don’t stop reading. I know that you are already ahead of me. You know where I am heading in this post. Samson was and is my hero because, plain and simple, because he had a “it is fight-pickin’ time” mentality. I’m so riled up that I will share it again, but this time in capital letters – HE HAD A FIGHT-PICKIN’ TIME MENTALITY. This way of thinking defeated the Lord’s enemy!
Consider this:
But the Spirit of the LORD powerfully took control of Samson,
and he snapped the ropes on his arms
as if they were burnt strands of flax, and they fell from his wrists.”
Judges 15:14 (New Living Translation)
* the Spirit of God gave him creative ways to torment the enemy (Judges 15:4-5).
* the Spirit of God had people asking in amazement who could have done such unbelievable damage to the enemy (Judges 15:6)
I’m not sharing this post just to continue my long-running writing streak. I’m publishing this post because it is time for us to push aside complacency and call upon the Spirit of the Lord to stir that “pick a fight with the devil” determination within us. Know that what the Spirit of God did in and through Samson, He can and will do in and through you. THIS GENERATION HAS BEEN HELD CAPTIVE LONG ENOUGH. We can’t sit back any longer. It’s FIGHT PICKIN’ time!
